DreamBuilder - Community Service (G10-G12)

This is my proudest achievement in high school. During the community service, I saw the disparity in educational opportunity between us and kids in rural areas, and how I can make use of my own knowledge and the technology to make a difference in their life.  I also feel the joy of completing a "mission impossible" with other people collaboratively and the essence of being a good leader.

WHAT?

Student-oriented organization:

 

Aim at helping kids in remote mountainous schools in China

WHY?

In Dec. 2017, I visit the a kid named Ning at a rural mountainous school  who I gave financial aid to for a year and experienced her local life for a week.

WHO?

As the student founder, I formed a team with 30+ warm-hearted and helpful students from all over Shanghai who are willing to share their love to the kids in the mountains.

 

WHERE?

Xinglong Primary School

  • A rural school on a mountain in deep Midwest China (Shaanxi)

  • 70 students + 8 teachers (G1-6)

Visiting the school, I found that the kids in the rural areas have dreams and aspirations about future, but lack a guidance to see the outside world. THEREFORE, ...

Computer donation

 

(2017.4 ~ 2017.10)

  1. Collected 20+ second-hand computers though online promotion 

  2. Reformatted laptops and installed softwares with teammates

  3. Received support from 100+ donors and participants (a warm letter)

  • Teammates video-chatted with the kids

  • 60 kids for the 1st time used technology

Christmas Visit

  • The 1st physical visit after computer donation

  • Christmas surprise!  (candies from "Santa")

  • Taught the kids typing, internet, and video chatting to help them keep in touch with us and explore the outside world

  • Celebrated New Year together

"Snapshot" Activity

 

(2018.2~2018.3)

  • The 1st online communication after computer donation

  • Collected 300+ photos and videos from people all over the world

  • Made videos to show them metropolitan and different Spring Festival traditions

  • Made a NEW YEAR WISHES special video

CAS Trip 

 

(2018.3~2018.6) Yearly school service trip

  • Raised $3000 through fundraising activities (selling self-made desserts, holding concerts...)

  • Donated to build the FIRST flushing toilet in the school

  • Taught music, art, PE lessons

  • Successfully proposed Xinglong as a permanent destination for future CAS Trips

        ...

MORE TO COME... 

Although there are much more to do, we've already built the bridge between the kids and the outside world, this vision will be their best mentor.
